Rapist's bail revoked, back behind bars

HE WAS granted bail despite raping a woman on the Pacific Hwy, but now Alessandro Bongiorno will have to await his sentence from a prison cell.

A Grafton District Court jury last week found the Sydney truck driver had picked up a woman from Coffs Harbour Airport in 2014 and raped her on the side of the road near Bom Bom State Forest after an argument broke out.

They were driving to Grafton, the court heard.

The jury found Bongiorno guilty of assault, indecent assault and rape, but District Court Judge James Bennett granted him bail until sentencing, with strict conditions including a ban on coming within 30km of his victim's home and having to report to police three times a week.

Prosecutors made an application to Sydney Supreme Court on Tuesday to have Bongiorno's bail revoked.

Justice Christine Adamson ordered Bongiorno to be taken into Corrective Services custody until his sentencing hearing in the district court on March 3 in Sydney.
