Radio jocks ride wave of experience
TWO local radio jocks have been nominated for the industry's most prestigious awards.
After just eight months on air, River 94.9's Ruby and Dave have been nominated for “Best On-Air Team” category for the 2009 Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAS), the most respected radio awards in the country.
Ruby Slipperz and Dave Greensmith took on the breakfast timeslot in January with Ruby moving back into radio after a stint as a Toowoomba City Councillor.
Mrs Slipperz said the Ipswich-based show was successful because people could relate to both herself and Mr Greensmith.
“I'm a mum and Dave is a single dad and we both have a lot of experience and can relate those experiences to viewers,” she said.
“People want something light, they don't want trash. And we just try to entertain and give them a good laugh and some nice music.”
Also nominated for an award are Sydney shock jocks Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O.
Despite belittling a 14-year-old girl live on air until she confessed to being the victim of rape, Mr Sandilands and Jackie O are up for Best Metropolitan On-Air Team.
Mrs Slipperz said Mr Sandilands had a shocking on-air history, and she was sick of the increase in trashy radio.
“I wasn't shocked by what Kyle did at all,” Mrs Slipperz said.
“It was trashy and horrendous what they did to that girl.
“I don't think that's funny at all but unfortunately there are people out there who do.”
Mrs Slipperz said radio had become akin to a tabloid in the past decade.
“Some people think their listeners want gossip,” she said.
“But we know our listeners don't want that sort of thing.”
The ACRAS are held on October 10 in Sydney.
