Racing to benefit from High Court

THE decision by the High Court to reject appeals by Sportsbet and Betfair, thereby releasing funds which have been held for the benefit of the racing industry, is about to inject new life into thoroughbred racing in NSW and into country racing in particular.

The Northern Rivers and North Coast racing communities have been invited to join Racing NSW chairman John Messara and CEO Peter V'landys in forums next Wednesday.

These will be the first opportunities since the Court's decision for those involved in country racing to hear what is being planned and to provide feedback.

The forum at Ballina racecourse will commence at 10.30am and be followed by the Coffs Harbour meeting at 2.30pm.

Both were scheduled originally for Tuesday but have been moved back one day because of unavoidable clashes in commitments.

"Friday's verdict in the High Court means we can start putting our plans into action," Messara said.

"Since the new Racing NSW board was appointed three months ago we have been consulting widely and drawing up a list of priorities to allow us to move swiftly once we had certainty on our funding.

"So these forums on Wednesday will be very important because we want to hear from everyone in the Northern Rivers and North Coast regions what they think needs to be done to improve racing in this area."

Peter V'landys said the forums would be open to owners, trainers, administrators and other industry participants, as well as punters, community leaders and local government representatives.

"We know that country racing has gone through some very tough times, but country racing is vital to our industry and we are totally committed to its success," he added.
