IT was the closest thing to a RAAF fashion parade you're likely to see as men and women lined up to pick out their new uniform.

Air Force personnel at RAAF Base Amberley are the first to be fitted out with the new, blue-hued general purpose uniform.

The GPU will replace the current camouflage uniforms, also worn by Army, for general base duties and in non-warlike environments such as humanitarian tasks and Defence assistance to the civil community.

Most members will have their first set by the end of next year and will eventually get two sets.

It is similar to the current Disruptive Camouflage Uniform with the obvious difference that it's predominantly blue rather than green.

The aim of the new uniform is to set apart Air Force from Navy and Army.

The pattern and colour combination were selected from a number of options with the blue and grey colours reflecting Air Force colours.

Navy has been issued a new uniform and Army are also getting new attire so all three services will have their own identity.

Army and Air Force will still wear the green camouflage uniform during field exercises.

Flight Lieutenant Dominique Hoffman and Corporal Jenna Kowald were the first two to be fitted out for the new uniforms yesterday.

Fittingly, Flight Lieutenant Hoffman is logistics officer while Corporal Jenna Kowald serves with the oldest operational squadron in Air Force - Number 1 Squadron who fly the Super Hornets and will be celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2016.

"I like the pattern. It's nice to be identified as Air Force," Flight Lieutenant Hoffman said.

"It's been a while; I was part of the roll out. Amberley and some of the surrounding areas like Oakey are part of zone one.

"Kitting out about 4000 people in a few short months is quite a task.

"It felt great straight away. I'll be more than happy to wear this all day."

RAAF says the other great benefit is that, just as our airmen and women serve our country, the new uniforms will be made in Australia.
