QUT a 'rising star' as it ranks among top young universities

QUEENSLAND University of Technology is Australia's the top young university, more than 60 places ahead of Brisbane rival, Griffith University.

The results of The Times 100 under 50 is a world-respected guide to tertiary institutions less than 50 years old.

Although founded as the Brisbane School of Arts in 1849, QUT was created in 1989, making it just 21 years old.

QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake said the university's moving up 14 places from 40 in 2012 showed it was a "rising star".

"QUT is an energetic and ambitious young university, full of good people, and the recognition is buoying," Prof Coaldrake said.

"It is also good to see so many of Australia's younger universities doing well, and this reflects positively on the quality and resilience of Australia's university system."

Times Higher Education editor Phil Baty said world university rankings were often dominated by older, wealthier institutions, which had been building a reputation sometimes for centuries.

"The 100 Under 50 is designed to highlight those universities that have joined the ranks of the world's finest, thanks to rapid development over a relatively short time," he said.

When considered against its global competitors, QUT ranked about 250.

The highest-ranking Australian university on the world list was University of Melbourne at 28.
