Queensland Raceway takes centre stage for action

THIS weekend continues the theme of big events at the Ipswich Motorsport Precinct.

This time it is Queensland Raceway's turn to host the third round of the 2016 Australasian Superbike Championship.

The Superbikes series will see five separate categories compete across 17 races on Saturday and Sunday at Queensland Raceway.

Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, Honda and Ducati will all be represented.

Queenslander Robbie Bugden (highlighted on the back page) leads the championship race.

A good result at his home circuit would set Bugden up for a shot at a series victory.

Willowbank Raceway hosts the Queensland Drag Racing Championships on Saturday.

The championships will attract competitors from around Queensland.

Categories lining up at this round are SuperComp, QDRC Comp Bike, Modified, Super Sedan, Super Street, Modified Bike, Junior Dragster, Super Gas and Drag Radial.

Last weekend's Australian kart title was an impressive show from Queenslander Brendan Nelson who has edged closer to a third Australian championship in TaG 125 after a dominant performance.

In X30, the FA Kart-mounted Nelson got to the front at the start of the race and delivered a superb victory beating home Leigh Nicolaou and Ipswich karter Adam Mercer.

Jack Doohan took his third win in succession in KA2 Junior. The Red Bull-backed Kosmic pilot won by more than six seconds and has all but wrapped up the championship.

Another weekend I am looking forward to is the Coates Hire Ipswich 300, which will see the best V8 Supercars drivers hit Queensland Raceway from July 19-22.
