QUEENSLAND Times photographer Claudia Baxter has claimed a major award at the prestigious 2013 PANPA newspaper awards.

Claudia's photo took out first place in this year's Lifestyle Photograph section.

Her winning pic was taken for the QT's Pubs Guide feature this year and featured smiling Boonah local Mick McGarrity at The Australian Hotel.

"My approach to photography is to capture something that tells a story," she said.

"I thought my photos for the pubs guide were beginning to look a bit too stylised and, as a photojournalist, I wanted to shoot something natural.

"Mick sitting at the bar, with his friendly face and easy banter gave me the perfect portrait of a larrikin character you would hope to find in each pub."

It was Claudia's first PANPA win after being named a finalist in the competition for the past three years.

"It's been a very exciting and rewarding win," she said.
