QT Schools Cup game called off

UPDATE: The first round of the QT Schools Cup was called off today, due to the wet weather.

The match was to be played at the Redbank Plains Recreational Reserve.

A decision on the game's future will be made later.

EARLIER:  A local derby between rugby league rivals, St Peter Claver College and Redbank Plains State School, will mark the first of three trial games between the two schools and Ipswich State High School.

St Peter Claver and Redbank will use the trial as a springboard ahead of their upcoming Gee Shield campaigns.

St Peter Claver rugby league program coordinator and coach Todd Riggs said there was plenty of history between the football schools.

"The two schools have had a great relationship over a long time," he said.

"They are just around the corner and we usually have a trial game against them and a recap game in term four."

With representative players in the Cyril Connell and Mal Meninga competitions unavailable due to the competition season launch tonight, both school teams will feature some fresh faces.

Riggs said the absence of representative players would give those new players a chance to make an impression.

"It's very much a trial for our guys and a chance for those blokes on the cusp to prove themselves," he said.

"We just want to see our boys compete."

Riggs and Redbank Plains State School coach Michael Armstrong have previously worked together at the Ipswich Jets. They have taken on board some of the playing style from the Intrust Super Cup side.

"We haven't done a lot of work in terms of team structure," Riggs said. "We've been trying to work on an expansive style of football and move the ball around a fair bit.

"We've lost a bit of size but have plenty of mobility so it suits our skill set."

Riggs and Armstrong agreed that the important lessons to pass on to their students extended beyond the playing field.

"Discipline is so important, it's bigger than playing," Armstrong said. "It's about doing the right thing by getting to school on time, putting in the hard work in the classroom and to be a good role model.

"You've got to help yourself when it comes to the workforce so hopefully we can prepare them for life outside school."

The first QT Schools Cup trial begins today at Redbank Plains Recreational Reserve with the under 14s from 4pm, followed by opens at 5pm.

Each half will be 30 minutes each way with no time outs.
