QT City of Ipswich Sports Awards - Lifetime Achievement Award

LES Kinnane was very much a part of the Ipswich Community. He was proud of his city and very proud to be a Queenslander.  A lasting memory for all who knew him will be the Maroon Blazer he wore to sports functions - the lapel filled with more badges than anyone could readily count.  As a school teacher, Les quickly became involved in the school sport scene and was rewarded for his dedication with appointments to positions of State Coach, State Manager and State Selector in his favoured sports of Cricket and Rugby League.

Les has been awarded a total of nine life memberships:

  • Ipswich and West Moreton Primary School Sports Association
  • Metropolitan West School Sport
  • Queensland School Sport
  • Queensland Primary School Cricket
  • Queensland Primary School Rugby League
  • Ipswich & West Moreton Cricket Association
  • Parents and Old Boys Ipswich
  • Ipswich Schoolboys Coach Squad

In 2000, Les was also awarded the Australian Sports Medal.

2012 was to be Les' 50th year as a member of the Management Committee for Ipswich Cricket.

In addition to his coaching and administrative roles, it was a familiar sight to see him behind a roller or pushing a mower around the Len Johnson Oval.

In his own sporting career, Les played a range of different sports, but his interest in Cricket and Hockey outweighed the others.

In 1981 Les joined the Ipswich Parents and Old Boys' Committee and work tirelessly in fundraising to help young sports people advance their sporting opportunities.

Sadly Les passed away earlier this year,
