Queensland has worst unemployment in country

QUEENSLAND'S unemployment rate is now the highest in the country at 6.1 per cent despite a huge surge in people getting a job in January.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Queensland now has a record number of workers at 2.47 million and a record number of women participating.

About 20,000 jobs were created in January, but this was offset by an extra 23,000 entering the labour market, many of them school and university leavers.

Treasurer Jackie Trad said the results were fantastic news.

"Since January 2015 there are 152,400 more jobs in Queensland,'' she tweeted.

Nationally, the unemployment fell slightly to 5.5 per cent as employment numbers grew for the 16th straight month.

Australia's female labour force participation rate reached an historic high of 60.5 per cent in January.

According to CommSec 403,300 jobs have been created in the past year in Australia - the most jobs in more than 12 years.

"The job market is clearly in great shape. Jobs are being created, more people are looking for work and businesses are still keen to hire. And clearly this is good news for retailers, new car retailers and real estate agents,'' economist Craig James said

"The good news is that improvement in the health of the job market is broad-based: regions and industries across the nation are reporting higher employment and an increase in hours worked.''
