Armed robber tries to swim across canal to escape police

A MAN who led police on a wild-goose chase that ended after a desperate swim for freedom across a canal at Lake Kawana has been arrested.

Police said around 3.20pm yesterday, a man approached a vehicle that was at a service station on Brisbane Road and allegedly threatened the driver and passenger with a knife.

The 29-year-old Buderim man then allegedly took off in the vehicle down the Nicklin Way towards Warana.

Police said the man crashed the car into traffic lights at the intersection of Kawana Island Boulevard and Nicklin Way, just outside the 7-Eleven convenience store.

He allegedly escaped on foot and was found hiding in a shed at Melody Crt.

As the police dragnet closed in, the man allegedly made one last ditch for freedom by jumping into Wyuna Canal and swimming across to the other side where he was arrested.

He was charged with two counts each of deprivation of liberty and armed robbery and one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possession of a knife in a public place, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and enter premises with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The man will appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates court today.
