Public service to come under Coalition spotlight

THE entire Commonwealth Public Service will come under the spotlight of the Coalition's promised Commission of Audit, Opposition leader Tony Abbott pledged on Thursday.

Mr Abbott said the audit would look at "the whole administration", searching for efficiencies and to improve public service productivity.

His comments come after the Coalition last week released figures showing $5.2 billion in savings from cutting 12,000 bureaucratic jobs through natural attrition.

While Mr Abbott has promised no funding for health or education would be affected, he said he would wait until the audit was completed making any promises.

A similar Commission of Audit was undertaken by the Newman government during its first year in power in Queensland.

Former prime minister John Howard also undertook a similar audit when he first took power in 1996.
