Priest hit by flooding

AFTER watching her own home go under in the city's devastating floods, Reverend Keren Terpstra now shares a unique bond with the city's flood victims.

The 32-year-old, who has been based at All Saints Anglican Church in Booval for 13 months, offered comfort and solace to others affected by the flood crisis, visiting people stranded at the city's evacuation centres.

The North Booval resident said she had been lucky to have parishioners volunteer to help her get precious personal possessions out of her Nixon Street home before waters hit.

Larger items such as her prized piano and a bedroom setting inherited from her parents had to be left behind.

Water started coming over her back retaining wall at her Nixon Street home about 9am last Wednesday.

Allowed back into her home Thursday afternoon, she said water had come up over the kitchen bench.

“It was just disgusting,” Rev Terpstra said.

“There was mud everywhere and the smell was terrible.

“Water had lifted everything up and dropped it in strange places.

“There was stuff from the kitchen in the bedroom.”

Rev Terpstra said a team of parishioners had come to her aid again on Friday, helping her clean her home.

“My experience has given me a greater base of solidarity with people who went through roughly the same thing,” she said.

Rev Terpstra said a special church service would be held at St Paul's Anglican Church next Tuesday from 7pm.

“It is an opportunity to pray, light a candle and share feelings of grief and trauma,” she said.

She said in the months to come, she hoped to continue helping her flock deal with the crisis, with plans to doorknock on affected homes, offer counselling and open up the parish pantry as needed.
