Prefab homes for flood victims

PRE-FABRICATED housing has been delivered to the Grantham community as locals continue to rebuild their lives after the floods.

Queensland Housing Minister Karen Struthers today joined Lockyer Valley Mayor Steve Jones to hand over keys for three temporary houses to Churches of Christ who will manage the accommodation.

Ms Struthers said each of the homes would allow a flood affected family to stay close to their community during the recovery period.

“The Grantham community has been through so much hardship and friends and family will be an important part of the healing process,” Ms Struthers said.

“That’s why we’re keen to help residents to stay connected to their communities and providing temporary homes is one of the ways we can do this.

“We’ll also continue to work with organisations like Lifeline to make sure long lasting community support is available.

“My department will continue working with Cr Jones and the Lockyer Valley Council to help Grantham recover with housing, and emotional and financial support.”

Mr Jones welcomed the first round of temporary houses to arrive in Grantham.

“Council has been working with the Department of Communities and their housing staff to provide homes to local people and I’m pleased with this result,” Cr Jones said.

"We’ll continue to be looking at both medium and long-term housing solutions and where it should be located.

“I’m keen to see our community recover as soon as possible and this is a good start. Rest assured there will be more to come soon.

“I know that’s what the community wants and we’re working hard to make that happen.”
