Pocket dynamos excel at nationals

IPSWICH Karate Association competitors showed the benefits of focus and commitment at the recent Australian Shotokan Karate Championships at the Gold Coast.

A team of 17 martial artists included the club's most impressive performer - 10-year-old Sherya Kumar. Sherya won the kata and kumite events.

There are no weight divisions in Shotokan Karate.

Another notable performance was from the petite Ciara Dodrill, who wowed the stadium crowd by fighting her way through a large pool of much taller and heavier competitors in her under 15 fights. She was beaten by just one point in the final.

Ipswich Karate Association has just two minor tournaments left for this year's season.

Apart from training, the association will focus on fundraising for a planned visit to Japan in the middle of 2014.
