Postecoglou has faith in young star Ikonomidis

AT just 20, attacking midfielder Chris Ikonomidis has an unwavering confidence in his ability to succeed on the international stage, and in one of the world's toughest competitions - Italy's Serie A.

A lot of it is thanks to Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou, and the belief he has shown in young players like Ikonomidis.

It was Postecoglou who gave Ikonomidis his international debut in March, the Sydney-born player going on to sign a five-year extension with Italian club Lazio this week.

The youngster should get more game time against Kyrgyzstan in a World Cup qualifier in Bishkek on Tuesday.

"The boss believes a lot in us young players," Ikonomidis said. "I really think that (debut against Macedonia) has helped a lot. "Everyone's looked at me in a different light, thinking 'wow, this kid's already debuted for his national senior team - he must be worth something'."
