Pisasale on Monday: Pool safety is essential

SPENDING hot summer days in the pool is a great way to cool down but it is important to be aware of pool safety laws.

Did you know safety barriers are mandatory for all portable pools and spas deeper than 300 millimetres?

Last week we launched a Pool Safety Awareness campaign with former Australian Olympic Swim Team coach Laurie Lawrence and Katherine Plint from Hannah's Foundation.

Visit council's website for more information.

On Thursday night I attended a farewell dinner for Air Commodore Tim Innes at RAAF Base Amberley.

Tim has been a great friend to the city during his posting and I thanked him for his support, service and friendship.

A warm welcome to his replacement, Air Commodore Scott Winchester.

The Animal Welfare League is holding an adoption drive this weekend to help ease numbers after a huge influx of animals was brought in to the rehoming centre recently.

For the weekend of December 13 and 14 people can adopt a dog or puppy for $50 (normally $250) and cats and kittens for $30 (normally $99).

See the Brisbane Heat at Limestone Park on Sunday, December 14 for a Fan Day and Practice Match. Fans of the Heat can meet their cricketing heroes.

Last week I dropped into Career Employment Australia at Goodna to see first-hand some new migrants and refugees who are taking up the challenge to learn English.

I met many amazing people who are happy and thankful to be here in Australia and excited to learn our English language. Keep up the great work.

Congratulations to the teachers, students and parents of Silkstone State School for winning the 2014 Ipswich's Healthiest School Awards.

Silkstone students are the healthiest in Ipswich with their commitment to healthy eating, education and exercise.

Well done.

Thank you to our orange angels, the SES for taking care of us during the start of storm season.

If you need assistance give them a call on 132 500. The SES can always use more volunteers so if you've ever thought about joining, visit their website emergency.qld.gov.au/ses
