Police should play fair around school zones
IS it that time of the year when the police are out to balance their books by writing up as many tickets as they can?
It must be because the Queensland Times editorial phone is starting to run hot with complaints about ridiculous fines.
One gentleman came into our office with pages of information surrounding the police booking him in an Ipswich school zone for doing 53kph at 2.12pm.
The 40kph speed limit period at schools has rightly been put in place to safeguard children going to and from the school. But pray tell me, just how many children are leaving class 60 minutes before the bell is sounded.
Police setting up in these zones an hour before classes finish can only be assumed as doing so to get as many unsuspecting drivers as they can.
Likewise if they are keeping their speed cameras on right up to 4pm they can also stand accused of trying to catch drivers when the school zone is deadly quiet.
One driver told us he had been issued a fine for driving at 54kph at 3.55pm outside a deserted school.
It's hard enough not to break a road rule with all the idiots driving on the roads around us without having the police unfairly targeting us.
