UPDATE: A Collingwood Park retiree reported hearing a whooshing sound and seeing a bright glow, hours before a fire damaged his neighbour's house in the early hours of the morning.

John Charles said he was concerned for the welfare of his neighbours following yesterday's blaze, which started in the kitchen area of the small brick home on Namatjira Dr.

The occupants of the home were not present at the time and firefighters had to force entry in order to bring the blaze under control.

Although police were initially investigating the cause of the fire, which was reported about 6am, it was later confirmed to be non-suspicious.

Mr Charles said he saw flames at the residence about four hours earlier, but did not contact authorities because he believed his neighbour had it under control.

"What I heard at 2am wasn't an explosion, it was more of a whoosh, like a rush of air," he said.

"I got out of bed to have a look and I could see the glow of flames through my kitchen window."

Mr Charles said he could see his neighbour putting the flames out and believed the situation was under control, so did not think it was necessary to call for help.

He then went back to bed, but was awoken by the sound of someone knocking on his door about 6am.

The fire had reignited and a passer-by had stopped to ask for Mr Charles to call Triple-0.

"I hope everything is alright with them, they are good neighbours," Mr Charles said.

The source of the blaze was later confirmed as a portable gas burner.

The fire was reported 6am, and caused severe damage to the kitchen of the small brick house on Namatjira Dve.

The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed.
