Rocky has more drug drivers caught than anywhere else in Qld

IT'S always a field day on the job whenever the police drug specialist team from Brisbane travels to Rockhampton.

That's according to Capricornia Police authorities, who yesterday said the specialist drug team gets more positive drug-driving results in Rockhampton and Central Queensland than any other region in the state.

Acting Inspector Ben Carroll (pictured) yesterday highlighted this view with "concerning" drug-driving results from the weekend's Emerald 100 Races.

He said of the hundreds of racegoers who attended the Emerald event, 10 punters were charged for driving under the influence of drugs.

Only one person was charged for drink-driving.

Act Insp Carroll said that ratio was alarming local authorities.

The drug-testing team travels to Rockhampton every fortnight, to try to combat the increasing number of drug-drivers.

"Our testing for drug-driving is targeted and therefore we have a better success rate at picking up these offenders," Act Insp Carroll said.

"I think we must be mindful of the demographics we have in Central Queensland, with our heavy industrial and mining industries.

"We have a lot of men aged between 18 and 50, plus we have blue-collar workers in this region ... this is why drug use is more prevalent in this area."

Rockhampton Police yesterday spoke to the media about drug-driving concerns in the region because they wanted the community to be aware of the dangers around driving.

A spate of road crashes in the past week, including a fatal crash near Stanwell and one near Yeppoon, prompted local police authorities to intensify their safety message to the community.

"We encourage the public to be vigilant on our roads," Insp Carroll said.
