'Cop-on-cop assault' after Ipswich Cup

A POLICE officer was charged with assaulting and obstructing a fellow officer at the Ipswich Cup on Saturday.

It is believed the incident occurred as a car the senior constable from Logan was travelling in was pulled over for an RBT as it was leaving the Ipswich Turf Club at 5.45pm.

The QT understands that while the car was pulled over, the 42-year-old senior constable allegedly gave the officer from the Ipswich District a clip behind the ear.

He was charged with obstructing and assaulting police.

Queensland Police said the officer was a passenger in a vehicle intercepted for an RBT.

"It will be alleged he became involved in an altercation with officers," the statement read.

The officer was issued with a Notice to Appear at the Ipswich Magistrates Court on July 1.

The Newman Government has vowed to get tough on assaults against police officers.

Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said the alleged actions of the officer were disappointing.

"It's a very disturbing revelation for us and very, very disappointing from an organisational point of view," he said.

"However, this obviously has to go through the court process as it normally would and at the same time we will be looking at it from the disciplinary process."
