Post on Facebook sparks talk of Reading Cinemas' closure

MANAGEMENT at Redbank Plaza have played down a rumour on Facebook that Reading Cinemas is closing at the end of the month.

The news quickly spread online on Friday, after Ipswich councillor Paul Tully posted unconfirmed reports of the cinema's closure on social media.

A spokeswoman for Redbank Plaza said the centre was in ongoing negotiations with the management of Reading Cinemas regarding the renewal of their lease.

She said while the negotiations were confidential, discussions so far had been positive.

"The Reading Cinemas are a valued part of our centre and we definitely would like to have them here in the foreseeable future," she said.

Cr Tully said he and the community would be "extremely disappointed" if the cinemas were to close.

Cr Tully said it was an important facility and that the closure would negatively affect many families in the area.

Management for Reading Cinemas refused to comment.
