Premier puts faith in mayors and councillors

MAYORS and councillors hold the key to regional economic success in Queensland Premier Campbell Newman's eyes.

While at a gathering of 900 business and community leaders, Mr Newman was asked how he would ensure regional Queenslanders would share in the economic growth of the state.

Mr Newman said, during his State of the State address at the annual Committee for Economic Development of Australia event, that he envisaged the state empowering local government.

"So we see ourselves providing the supporting infrastructure and funding to help mayors and councils do the things they need to do," he said.

"Our economic development policy will be about encouraging industry in those regional centres."

Mr Newman said the RegionsQ framework, developed by Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney's office, listed what the State Government did to assist local governments, particularly in taking their communities forward.

He also referred to the Queensland Plan's strategy to build up populations in the regions.

Mr Newman said the state had already given mayors and council authority.

He went over what he felt were his government's top achievements since elected and called upon the attendees to back his LNP government at the next election.
