Pattinson leads Australia to victory

A DEVASTATING spell of fast-bowling from James Pattinson has led Australia to a commanding nine-wicket win over New Zealand with a day and a half to spare.

One Test after Pat Cummins burst onto the international scene, 21-year-old Pattinson scythed through the Black Caps' specialist batsmen to have the astonishing figures of 5-7 within seven overs at the Gabba.

Excepting a 52-run partnership between Dean Brownlie (42) and Daniel Vettori (17), NZ never looked capable of securing a draw. It needed tailenders Reece Young (11 not out) and Tim Southee (8) to force Australia to bat for a second time.

Needing only 19 for victory, the only problem for Australia was a recurring one: another failure for Phillip Hughes, due to offering a chance behind the wicket.

While Hughes began the innings with a confident back-foot cut of Tim Southee that flew to the boundary, he was dropped off the first ball of the next ball on 7, edging a tame Chris Martin delivery into the slips that was fumbled by Brendon McCullum.
