Patricia wants 50m pool and recreation centre for Div 3
SECURING funding for a public recreation centre and water park will be a key priority for Division 3 candidate Patricia Petersen if elected.
Apart from Springfield, Ipswich does not have an undercover 50m heated pool and Ms Petersen said a location in Riverview would be an ideal location for one,
"We are well overdue for a 50m indoor heated pool and I just hope we can get it in Division 3," she said.
"There is space next to the railway station at Riverview and nobody is using that area.
"It is an enormous space and close to public transport.
"The buses go past there and it is easy to get to by car and there are plenty of spaces for parking.
"It is a perfect location for the recreation centre and water park."
Ms Petersen said young people and families in the division were crying out for somewhere to swim that was safe and secure.
She said her project would satisfy those needs.
"We have aqua lakes in the area and I don't think it is a solution to just put up signs telling kids it is dangerous and not to swim there," she said.
"I have spoken to kids from Riverview State School - 10 and 11-year-olds - and they have told me if they had somewhere to go they wouldn't be interested in going to those dangerous aqua lakes. It would help solve that problem.
"Not only would it be good for those with disabilities and for cardio and rehab patients to go to a heated pool, it would also be great for kids.
"Certainly having a water park or a water feature would be fantastic for them.
"I think this kind of a project could save lives."
Ms Petersen is one of six candidates aiming to inherit the division vacated by the retiring Cr Victor Attwood in what is tipped to be a closely fought affair.
