Palaszczuk visit to Governor only 'courtesy call'

POLITICAL figures held their breath late on Tuesday when Labor leader Annastacia Palaszczuk announced she would meet Governor Paul de Jersey.

But the meeting was not for Ms Palaszczuk to ask him to allow her to form a government, which has been the Labor leader's focus this week.

On Monday, Ms Palaszczuk said she was expecting to approach the Governor before the close of business on Wednesday, possibly earlier, and ask to form a government.

It was expected Labor would secure 44 seats and, with the support of independent Peter Wellington, it would secure a 45-seat majority.

With about 35 seats of the 89 declared this afternoon, Ms Palaszczuk tweeted: "At 4pm. I will visit (The Governor) His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC at Government House".

Seconds later, she tweeted the answer to the question many were asking; was she going to ask to form a government?

"Seats are yet to be declared and visit to (the Governor) is a courtesy call to discuss current issues pertaining to the Jan 31 election," she tweeted. When more than half of seats were still to be declared, Ms Palaszczuk's office said it was unclear when she would approach Mr de Jersey to ask to form government.

"The election result will be finalised in the next couple of days and at that time I will call upon the Governor of Queensland and I will convey to him my intention to be able to form government in this state," Ms Palaszczuk said on Monday.

"Labor, with the support of Peter Wellington, will have 45 seats. That is a majority."
