Pair nurtured abandoned drug plants

WHEN an Ipswich couple moved into a Raceview home they discovered six marijuana plants growing in the backyard, so they started caring for and harvesting the crop.

Police raided the home on March 22 last year and found the plants, from 1m to 2m high, and more than 600g of marijuana stashed throughout the home.

Lee Desmond Montgomery, 45, and Tina Louise Meloury, 42, yesterday pleaded guilty in Ipswich District Court to producing and possessing dangerous drugs.

The court was told the plants weighed more than 2kg. The harvested cannabis was found hidden under a wedding dress and in a filing cabinet, a cupboard and bedside drawer.

The prosecution called for a fine as punishment because the couple had no criminal history and had co-operated with police.

Judge Greg Koppenol said there wasn't a commercial element to the offence and fined them $1000 each.
