Painter awarded $58m after skull bashed in at bar

ANTONIO Lopez Chaj has been awarded US$58 million in compensation over an assault that left him with half his skull permanently caved in.

The 43-year-old house painter was bashed by a security guard and a waiter after trying to intervene in a beating outside a California bar.

Lawyers said the unlicensed, untrained security guard beat Chaj with a baton, kicked him in the head eight times and smashed his skull against pavement four times.

He received such severe brain damage that he is now unable to speak and requires 24-hour nursing care.

A Torrance Superior Court jury unanimously agreed to order the security company that employed the offender to pay Lopez Chaj $58 million in compensation, lawyers acting for the family announced Tuesday.
