Owners hoping Mourinho is the special one

THE owners of outsiders Wandjina and Mourinho have each paid a $130,000 late entry fee in a bid to gain a start in Saturday's $3 million Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.

Final declarations are due for the weight-for-age championship this morning, and 16 runners were still paid up for yesterday.

The maximum field size for the race is 14, although officials could cut it to 12.

Wandjina and Mourinho (pictured) would be outsiders if they gained a start, with the pair quoted at $41 with Ladbrokes yesterday.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse, Wandjina ran third to Shooting To Win in the recent Caulfield Guineas, while Mourinho won the Cranbourne Cup at his last start and was scratched from last week's Moe Cup in the hope of gaining a Cox Plate run.

Caulfield Stakes winner Fawkner is the favourite ($4) with Ladbrokes, ahead of the Aidan O'Brien-trained Adelaide ($5.50) and Sydneysider Sacred Falls ($6).
