THE Ripley Rd overpass on the Cunningham Highway will be completely closed from tomorrow until August as repair work gathers momentum.
The bridge was hit by an oversize truck travelling west down the highway on January 6 this year.
Since then the Department of Transport and Main Roads has started work, lowering the road and raising the bridge, in the hope of ending such incidents.
Over the past few years the bridge has taken several hits from trucks that were a fraction too high, resulting in extensive delays and detours for motorists.
The latest one has proven the most costly, with one lane of the overpass closed for the past few months and west-bound Cunningham Hwy traffic forced to detour around the bridge.
A department spokesman said detours would be put in place to assist motorists while the overpass was completely closed.
"Traffic will need to use the Swanbank and Yamanto exits to access Flinders View and Ripley," he said.
"Cunningham Hwy traffic will continue to be diverted via the on and off ramps at Ripley Rd, Flinders View."
Ripley Convenience Takeaway employee Natasha Samra said the bridge work sometimes added about 15 minutes to her trip to work via the Cunningham Hwy.
Traffic occasionally builds up along the Ripley Rd off ramp, heading west on the highway, at peak times.
"It's a bit of a pain, but usually not too bad," Ms Samra said.
"I cop the traffic if I leave a little late and get there about 7.30am."
For those who don't need to use Ripley Rd, Fischer Rd at Flinders View is also an easy way to get to Ripley.
