Over 1200 pensioners have power cut after high bills - ALP
RECORD numbers of pensioners in regional Queensland are seeing electricity disconnected as the Newman Government's failure to keep a core election promise continues to bite.
The Queensland Competition Authority's March 2014 quarter report shows 1,210 customers electricity customers of seven companies who were pensioner/concession card holders had their power disconnected for non-payment.
Over 730 were Ergon Energy customers and 236 were AGL Sales.
Shadow Treasurer Curtis Pitt said that for the March 2013 quarter, 425 pensioners had their power cut after being faced with skyrocketing bills.
He said others were making tough decisions just so they could make ends meet and keep the lights on.
