Our new series marking key milestones in WWI

IT was the war that changed the world, and the battle that helped to shape the Australian fighting spirit.

As Australia prepares to celebrate the centenary of the Anzac Cove landings at Gallipoli next year, and the nation's subsequent involvement in the First World War on the Western Front, we will bring you special coverage marking key milestones in the war leading up to the fateful campaign.

Our Centenary Milestones series starts on Monday, July 28 with Austria-Hungary's declaration of war against Serbia, the event that sparked a chain of war declarations to bring much of Europe into war with one another and to draw fledgling federation Australia into the conflict to defend its "Mother Country".

On Tuesday we will carry a special NiE page highlighting some of the important facts of the First World War, a reminder that while some of the events may have fallen out of living memory, remembrance remains.

The Centenary Milestones series will then follow landmark events such as Australia's recruitment for volunteer troops, the thousands of young men who flocked to enlist and sail overseas, and the machinations behind British War Cabinet doors that led Anzac troops into the mouth of assured defeat in Turkey.

Brush up on your history by following our commemorative coverage, which will include stories from families in the region with connections to the First World War and subsequent conflicts, carrying the Anzac spirit with them all the while.
