Pisasale on Monday: Our first peoples count

THIS morning we launch the Ipswich City Council Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Accord for 2015.

It is important to acknowledge the original Accord working group who in 1995 supported council to commence a formal reconciliation initiative with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

In 1996 this process became the Indigenous Australian Accord.

Encouraging our future leaders is close to my heart so tomorrow night I will be attending a dinner with boarders from Ipswich Grammar and Girls' Grammar. I'm looking forward to talking about living in our community and about our roles and responsibilities as we get older.

Importantly, it will also be an opportunity for students to discuss their ideas and aspirations as they prepare for their own future.

The sport of basketball is going from strength to strength in Ipswich.

This week the city plays host to the 42nd Australian Championships for under 20s and the Ivor Burge Championships for athletes with an intellectual disability. Show your support for the 24 teams here representing seven Australian states and territories.

The under 20 championship is exciting basketball and is the last chance for these athletes to represent their state in an Australian championship.

Finally this week, I'd like to highlight the Ipswich Orpheus Chorale which has a long and successful history producing musical theatre in Ipswich.

This month's production will highlight this success by showcasing songs and scenes from some of their favourite and most memorable shows.

Award-winning soloists from the chorale will present crowd pleasing numbers from shows such as Les Miserables, Oklahoma, Fiddler on the Roof, Jesus Christ Superstar and Cats.

Musical director Thomas Keenan says the show will incorporate well known and much loved songs, many of which will be audience favourites. Encore.

Songs and Show-stoppers from Orpheus Musicals runs from February 19 to 21 at the Ipswich Orpheus Chorale Complex 122 Chermside Rd.

Tickets are available from ipswichorpheuschorale.org.au
