Oprah admits to OWN network mistake
OPRAH Winfrey, the once unassailable empress of US talk shows, has admitted that she made "101 mistakes" trying to launch her own cable network and that, had she known then what she knows now, she probably would never have tried.
Since its debut in January 2011, the OWN network, a joint venture with Discovery, has failed to gain much traction even with audiences that kept Winfrey in the ratings stratosphere for 25 years as host of The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Despite showing some improvement this year, it is still only attracting about 180,000 viewers a day.
"The idea of creating a network was something I'd wanted to do.
"Had I'd known that it was this difficult, I might have done something else," Winfrey, 58, told CBS News.
She insisted that corrections she had made since then made her confident that OWN could recover its balance.
"Launching when we really were not ready to launch" would be among the top five errors, she added.
