OPINION: The secret to giving a great gift

CHRISTMAS is almost upon us and many of us are still scrambling to choose the perfect gift for a friend or relative. What do they want? What do they need? We can spend a lot of time asking ourselves these questions.

If you really think about it, gifts are basically a form of communication. Some gifts communicate intimacy, while others a certain distance. Some gifts are humorous, while others are merely obligatory.

Some gifts say "I love your style, I think this will suit you," while others say "I care about you." And let's be honest, some gifts are just downright insulting. We've all had them, the gift that leaves you gasping, "Oh, thanks, that's interesting/different."

What gifts communicate is seldom attached to the price tag. I find the easiest question to ask when trying to think of a gift is: "What do I want to say to this person?"

In the meantime, I have two standbys. Not wildly imaginative, but they rarely disappoint and never insult. Firstly, I suggest a beautiful candle. It's easy, as there are so many stylish and deliciously scented candles available now. My reasoning is most of us love an indulgent candle but we rarely buy them for ourselves, so they are always welcome.

The second suggestion is an extravagant photo frame, such as a stamped, sterling silver picture frame. This is a more generous gift, but you can also personalise it by including a carefully chosen, quality printed photo. Framed, the photo will likely last longer than any on your phone - and the thought will remain for many Christmases to come.
