OPERA enthusiast David Janetzki always says music gives a voice and expression to human emotions words can't achieve.

"Opera is really an event," he said.

Mr Janetzki, head of legal and governance at Heritage Bank, a former senior lawyer and deputy chairman of the Empire Theatres Foundation, was recently appointed to the board of Opera Queensland as a regionally-based director.

"Opera Queensland is really trying to push into regional Queensland," he said.

The father-of-two said Project Puccini, an event well received by Toowoomba audiences and seen by 6500 people around regional Queensland, was the first step in trying to bring opera to a wider audience.

"There's a real focus on bringing opera to all of Queensland, not just Brisbane," he said.

"Project Puccini was the most successful Opera Queensland regional engagement ever and it has probably redefined how opera will be experienced in regional Australia for the foreseeable future."

Mr Janetzki, who is also a trained pianist, discovered his love of opera when his wife Melinda, a professional opera singer who has performed professionally throughout Europe, began her career.

Mr Janetzki was put forward for the position by members of the Empire Theatres Foundation and hopes to strengthen the relationship between the foundation and Opera Queensland.

  • The singers don't use microphones, even though they're singing accompanied by a live orchestra.
  • The term "opera" comes from the Latin opus, or "work". The term "soap opera" was first recorded in 1939 as a derogatory term for daytime radio shows that were sponsored by soap manufacturers.
  • The famous proverb "the opera ain't over 'til the fat lady sings" in reference to buxom Brunhilde's 10-minute aria at the end of Wagner's Ring cycle operas is usually attributed to pro basketball coach Dick Motta, who in turn attributes it to San Antonio sportswriter/broadcaster Dan Cook, who says he overheard a friend say it.
  • The shortest opera is only seven minutes long and is Darius Milhaud's The Deliverance of Theseus.
