Afghani asylum seeker arrested over stabbing: Opposition

A MAN arrested over a fatal stabbing in Sydney's west on Thursday is believed to be an Afghani asylum-seeker, living in Australia on a bridging visa.

The revelation, which came from Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison, had not been confirmed by police on Thursday night.

Detective Inspector Paul Arnold would only tell reporters that police had arrested a 36-year-old Afghan-born Iranian and were awaiting the arrival of an interpreter.

Two men, believed to be family members, were found with stab wounds in their Berala home on Thursday morning.

They were taken to hospital where one of them died soon after.

The second man was undergoing surgery on Thursday but his wounds were not believed to be life-threatening.
