Pride improves as Knights left to recover from rare thumping

ON a weekend where the Ipswich Knights received a rare touch-up, Western Pride continued their steady progress in the National Premier League.

The Ipswich City Bulls also gained a lift as Western Spirit had a forgettable game.

After holding the top teams to draws or only two goal losses in the first round, the Knights suffered their biggest defeat of the Brisbane Premier League season on Saturday night. The Knights were outclassed 6-0 by Peninsula Power.

That disappointing result came after the Knights Reserves beat Peninsula 4-2 at AJ Kelly Park.

In yesterday's NPL game, the Pride improved on a 4-0 first round loss to Sunshine Coast to only lose 2-0.

The home side secured victory in injury time, showing how much the young Pride side has progressed.

"It was definitely a better performance (than the first round),'' Wehrman said.

"The boys were pretty down about the loss. But they fought really hard today.

"We were in the game until the last second.

"We were just missing that last little pass, that last little segment in the third of the game.

"It was workmanlike.

"Sunshine Coast had to earn that win today.''

The Ipswich City Bulls won their Capital League 2 match after a sluggish first half.

Trailing 1-0, the Bulls found a way to beat Oxley United 4-1 at Sutton Park.

Striker Liam Mercer netted a hat-trick from two fine headers and a penalty. Jamie Beahan scored City's fourth goal.

"We didn't have any spark and I probably put it down to the last two weeks we haven't trained that much,'' coach Nev O'Sullivan said.

"It just took them half a game to get going again.

"At the end of the day, we've beaten the bottom team by three goals so it's nothing to get excited about but it's a good springboard to push on from.''

The Bulls Reserves beat Oxley United 2-0.

Player-depleted Western Spirit lost their Capital League 1 match 8-0 to Souths United.
