Old times come alive

MONTO'S main street is being rejuvenated.

The latest building to be revamped is the old Central and North Burnett Times building, known as the old Monto Herald building.

It has been sitting vacant since 2004 when the business moved its Monto base. Jacqui Brown has taken the initiative to bring the building back to life.

Ms Brown said she was not daunted by what's involved in restoring the building and has broken the work into stages.

Her aim is to turn the building into a museum and venue for showcasing arts and crafts.

"I have to get rid of pigeons before anything can be done," she said.

"This building had been described as a thorn in the side of the community and now it will become something of value."

The building, circa 1938-39, was initially a garage but became the home to Monto's newspapers.

Printing ceased in 1981 and the business left in 2004.

Do you have any knowledge of the history of this building, or some first-hand memories? We would like to hear from you at the Monto office or email george.smith@cnbtimes.com.au.
