Old habits die hard for recidivist property offender

A FORMER council worker who moved to Queensland to start afresh has been jailed after he returned to his old habits.

The allure of drugs was too strong for Robert John Henderson, 38, despite having settled down with his partner and children during a three year hiatus from crime.

Henderson pleaded guilty on Monday in Ipswich District Court to a host of break and enter and property offences stemming from a three week crime spree last year.

Crown prosecutor Peter O'Conner told the court Henderson broke into five businesses across the region including those at Ipswich, Wacol and Raceview.

He said Henderson was no stranger to the inside of a jail cell.

"He has an extensive and deplorable criminal history with more than 19 break and enter offences in NSW alone," he said.

"He is a recidivist offender who is a menace to businesses in the area and they need to be protected from him."

Defence barrister Scott Neaves said all the items stolen for the various businesses had been recovered.

He said the crimes were at the low end of the spectrum.

"He knows he needs to change his ways . . . It is really now or never for him," he said.

Judge Sarah Bradley sentenced Henderson to two-and-a-half years in jail but released him on immediate parole after taking into account the 234 days he had already served behind bars.

"Usually people of your age realise if they want to be a good father and partner then the idea is to stay out of jail and off drugs," she said.

"Clearly you have not realised that just yet."
