Old foe awaits Arsenal but boss confident of success

FOOTBALL: Manager Arsene Wenger has faith Arsenal's time has come in the Champions League and will finally progress past the round of 16 - something the Gunners have not achieved since 2009.

Though recent history - and a formidable German opponent in Bayern Munich - is against them in February, Wenger has looked to the Book of Genesis for inspiration.

"Look, the last six years we have not come past the last 16,” he said. "They said that God made the world in seven days and this is the seventh day for us. So we have to get a special day.”

Arsenal has been knocked out by Bayern Munich in two of the past four Champions League tournaments and suffered a demoralising 5-1 loss to it in the group stage last season.

Wenger is desperate to make amends for past failures.

"I am responsible for the results so I don't want to escape when I don't meet the expectations of people who love this club,” he said.

"You feel guilty because you always question yourself and your decision making. I think that's completely normal.”

The Gunners sit second on the English Premier League table behind Chelsea and are coming off a 3-1 win over Stoke.

"The best way to have momentum is to go into the Champions League with a good position in the league. Then the belief is high ... I am convinced that is absolutely vital,” he said.

"We are all here to change history. We are here to make history so we have to change what happened before. And make it better.”

The two teams do battle in the first leg of their round-of-16 match-up on February 16.

Elsewhere, reigning title-holder and La Liga leader Real Madrid hosts Napoli.

Full draw: Manchester City v Monaco, Real Madrid v Napoli, Benfica v Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich v Arsenal, FC Porto v Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid, Paris St-Germain v Barcelona, Sevilla v Leicester
