Occhilupo drops in to town

OCCY was in town last week and showed that at 45 he still has the moves to remind us he was a world professional surfing champion.

The Occhilupo family - Mark, wife May and their two boys - all enjoyed small and clean conditions at Agnes Water during the week.

The swell slowly died, but showed signs on Friday of returning for another few days of autumn bliss in the Gladstone region.

Down south it has been pumping, and that continued over the weekend, but alas, most of it is just a bit below Fraser Island.

However, conditions are close to perfect and the water is still warm, so get out there and enjoy.

THE contest scene is relatively quiet last week, although the pro women are going at it in pretty heavy conditions in Sydney at the Beachley Classic.

There were a few victims of heavy surf and exposed reef and rocks at Dee Why, with New Zealand's Sarah Mason taken to hospital with cuts and abrasions.

Australia's Steph Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons are through to the quarters and are looking likely to take a stranglehold on the world rankings.

Gilmore won on the Gold Coast and in New Zealand, while Fitzgibbons won the Bells at Easter. Both will travel to Brazil with the world title on the line.

THE ASP men's pro tour will also be in Brazil next month for the Rio Billabong Pro, with the locals starting favourites despite current tour rankings.

Every year there seems to be another red-hot young kid out of Brazil going nuts. Sorry, couldn't resist it.
