CAN you imagine running a marathon that involves wading through chest-deep water in seven degree temperatures or scaling a vertical hill in 36 degree heat?

What about combining that with obstacles including rope climbs, sandbag carrying, crawling under barbed wire through thick mud, fire jumping and cargo net climbing?

Welcome to the world of obstacle course racing.

Rockhampton couple Katie and Tim Griffin have been involved in this sport for about a year and say you don't have to be super fit - it's all about determination.

"There was such a feeling of accomplishment (after my first race)," Katie said.

"You get to the end and think wow, I can't believe I just did that."

Tim is hoping to generate more interest in the Rockhampton community, with an ultimate goal of convincing a major company like Spartan to hold an event in the local area.

"It's becoming bigger … (but) I always have to travel to at least Brisbane to do it," he said.

"There's not much in Rocky, except for local fun runs," Katie agreed.

Tim has created a Facebook group called CQ Obstacle Course Racers where interested people can share news, tips and information.

"Straight running is fairly monotonous," he said.

"(This) gives people a reason to train and something to work towards.

"It may look daunting, but it's all about giving it a go."

The couple trains four or five times a week with exercises including running, weightlifting, stair running and obstacle practice.

They have completed four major races so far; Warrior Dash Brisbane, Kokoda Grunt Brisbane, Run for Your Freakin' Life NZ and the Spartan Super Brisbane.
