Bashing victim in coma as he fights for life

AN OAKEY man remains in a coma in hospital after being struck in the head during two fights at a tavern early on Sunday morning.

Shane Smith, 37, was airlifted to the Gold Coast University Hospital early on Sunday morning after allegedly being struck by two men in separate but linked fights.

Mr Smith is expected to undergo specialist treatment in coming days as police continue to appeal for information relating to the weekend incident.

Two men, both 24, have been charged over the incident with one appearing briefly in court yesterday.

Russell James Smith, 24, was released on bail with strict conditions following a brief appearance in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on one count of grievous bodily harm over the incident.

A second man charged is expected to appear in court later this month on an assault occasioning bodily harm charge.

Meanwhile Toowoomba Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Senior Sergeant Paul McCusker appealed for any witnesses to contact police.

He said police would allege Mr Smith and one of the accused were involved in a fight inside the Bernborough Tavern in Oakey about 12.30am on Sunday before they, and another man, left the licensed venue. Police will allege Mr Smith was then struck again, causing his critical head injuries.

"We're asking any members of the public who may have been in the vicinity of Campbell St to come forward to police," Det. Snr Sgt McCusker said.
