North Ipswich club to expand Scroungers carnival

NORTH Ipswich Bowls Club officials are keen to build on the success of their recent Spring Scroungers Carnival.

More than 50 bowlers participated in the inaugural competition.

Cash and voucher prizes for the event were provided via sponsorship from Bendigo Bank and Jets Leagues Club as part of their local community support initiatives.

A qualifying round of 12 ends was played to rank players into a winners group and an others group then played a second 12 end semi-final round that produced rink winners to play a short three-end final.

Carnival winners group winner was Steve Nicolaou, who snatched victory with his last bowl ahead of runner-up Ross Mackenzie. The other finalists were Arthur Simpson, Des Whelband and Jay Edmunds.

The Others group winner was Guy Deed (South Acacia Bowls Club,) ahead of runner-up Nancy Cairney. The other group finalists were Brian Ekeberg, Yvette McLean, Don Currie and Ian Revie.

The full day program culminated in a presentation of sponsors prizes by James Miles from the Riverlink Shopping Centre branch of the Bendigo Bank.

North Ipswich club officials are considering making the future carnival appealing to beginner and experienced bowlers playing as individuals in rinks of up to five players.

Following the success of this inaugural event, a similar carnival is being planned for autumn next year.

In the meantime, interested bowlers are invited to join the NIBC regular game of Scroungers held every Sunday at North Ipswich Bowls Club. Bowlers can nominate at 10am for a 10.30am start.

Inquiries with NIBC on 3281 1979, or Keith Brown on 0409 664468.
