NORTEC settles 1167 into work
LOCAL employment provider NORTEC has smashed its goal of providing 1000 jobs in 100 days.
The campaign ended on November 8 and the final count was 1167 people placed into work.
"During the campaign only sustainable employment placements were counted - no short- term casual or transitory jobs were included", said Nortec's Michelle Dowding.
"We are happy with our result considering the current economic climate - we were quite surprised how well it went actually."
The campaign was Northern NSW based (from Nambucca to Tweed Heads).
Of the 1167 people placed, 311 people were placed into work in the Coffs region which averaged out to approximately three people employed every day.
One of those people is Sandra Clark, who's been employed by Coffs Property Estate Agents as an assistant property manager.
"NORTEC were most helpful," said Coffs Property Estate Agents principal John Sercombe.
Before the placement, Sandra completed a Certificate III in Business at NORTEC, and is studying for and a Certificate of Registration.
"When I started I didn't know how to turn on a computer. Now I'm studying online," she said.
NORTEC employment consultant Jane McGowan said the challenges involved in placing people in a difficult job market were made up for when it all came together.
"For us to make a difference to someone's life makes it all worth it," she said.
"There are so many programs available like courses, interview assistance and business help. We even help with things like getting a driver's licence."
For Sandra, this kind of support has proved invaluable.
"I didn't know how just much help was available until Jane started working with me."
