Non shoppers must pay to park all day
THE TIME has come for the free parking to be taken away from those who fill the carpark under the Ipswich CBD Mall.
When you walk into the mall, you hardly see a person shopping, yet try and find a carpark underneath during the week and it's as if was the final days of the Christmas rush.
The few remaining retailers don't need anything to take away from their chances to try and make a dollar.
The problem isn't isolated to the mall carpark.
There are also issues at the local major shopping centre carparks, especially those close to a railway station.
The retailers pay substantial rents to have a shop in the big centres, many in excess of $100,000, and the reason they are based there is to get the foot traffic outside their shop front.
They don't pay to see the carpark outside filled with commuters who rarely bother to do anything at the shopping centres except walk past them.
Obviously taking away the free parking will upset many, but it's better to do that than to see small businesses suffer.
They are under enough pressure trying to beat off online retailers who can operate out of the boot of their car while not employing anyone except themselves.
