No off-season for Jets co-coaches
WHEN Ben and Shane Walker accompany their families and friends on holiday to Hamilton Island next weekend there is a chance they may stop thinking about rugby league briefly.
Not a big chance mind you.
While the players are enjoying thier off-season, the Walkers are constantly planning ahead for the 2016 Queensland Cup season.
"I started thinking about next year about eight weeks ago," Ben Walker revealed.
It is how the Jets have been able to sign South Sydney under-20 prop Jesse Roberts and line-up a pre-season trial against the Manly Warringah NRL squad.
On February 20 the Jets will tackle the Sea Eagles at Pittwater Pack, near Sydney's northern beaches.
"Trent Barrett rang me about three weeks ago and asked if we could put a Queensland Cup rep team or something like it up," Walker said.
"I said, 'Don't worry about a rep team. We'll play you.' "
It will likely give the Jets the chance to go up against former Ipswch hooker Matt Parcell, who is about to join the Sea Eagles.
It will also give them the chance to get to know any new faces in the squad.
"It'll be really good for the guys," Walker said.
"Six of them are now at that level and everyone wants to be.
"It's a great experience getting to know what it's like to play with and against those blokes.
"Any trip will be important to us because we will be interested to see some new players."
Not that they're expecting too many.
Walker is more excited about seeing the development from within continue.
"I'm excited to see Wes Conlon and Tyson Lofipo back," he said of two Jets who missed much of 2015 due to injury.
"Rowan Winterfield is a chance of coming back too."
