Nine deaths in Philippines being linked to war on criminals

NINE deaths in the Philippines on Saturday are being linked to President Rodrigo Duterte's declaration of war on drug dealers and other criminals.

Police admit to killing 103 suspects between May 9, the date of Mr Duterte's election, and July 7, but insist they are operating within the law.

Eight of the nine killed on Saturday died in the town of Matalam.

The body of the ninth, a yet-to-be-identified man, was found on a road in Manila, his torso covered with a sign reading "I am a pusher".

Civil rights campaigners have accused police of performing summary executions.
