New waste rules to pick up safety

NEW council guidelines for waste storage and collection at multiple residential developments have taken effect.

Planning and Development Committee chairman Paul Tully said the Implementation Guideline 23 – Refuse Arrangements and Management for Multiple Residential Development – was developed to streamline the process for managing and servicing domestic and recycling waste bins for multiple residential development.

“The positioning of bins in townhouses and apartments is important to the safety of tenants and visitors,” Cr Tully said.

“The guideline will assist applicants to design a development layout, giving consideration to the appropriate number and positioning of bins.”

Council encourages early consultation to plan waste storage and collection, especially for proposed on-site collection.

“It is hoped that early consultation will identify potential health and safety risks, minimise possible injury or damage to property, and enable modifications to the proposed design prior to costly detailed design stages.

“Poor design decisions which do not properly address waste management can hinder servicing options and the management of the development.”
